Children with special needs undergo oral hygiene checkup

Karachi: A Bahria University Medical and Dental College team recently conducted an interactive oral health awareness and free dental checkup visit to Ida Rieu School for Blind & Deaf.

The BUDC Health Care Professional (HCP) team comprising Prof Kulsoom Fatima Rizvi, Vice-Principal and  Head of Community Dentistry Department, Dr Mohsin Haider, Senior Lecturer, Dr Maliha Arshad and Dr Rabbia Imtiaz, Lecturer in the Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry and Dr Khuzaima, Dr Naseema, Dr Rabea, Dr Fatima Ikram, Dr Ayesha Wahab, Dr Leeza, Dr Fatima Tasleem, House Officers.

The target audience included 350 deaf children of 7-15 years. 

The house officers conducted dental checkups of the children who were accompanied by their teachers, who assisted the HCP team in asking questions and delivering oral hygiene instructions to them through sign language. 

The children were given tooth brushing demonstration, and other oral hygiene maintenance instructions in sign language and lively interaction designed as per their age and special needs. 

The oral health condition of the children was recorded on validated WHO forms. 

The team found the overall oral hygiene condition of these children good. 

The BUDC team looks forward to conducting more such oral health education and awareness sessions. – PR
