KARACHI - As every year the Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry, Bahria University Medical and Dental College, organized a students’ poster competition among 2nd Year BDS students.
The poster competition titled, “Medical and Dental Emergencies” was supervised by Dr. Kulsoom Fatima Rizvi, HOD Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry and hosted by faculty members of the department, Dr. Nazish Zafar and Dr. Raima Bashir. The theme given to the participants for their posters was aimed at improving their understanding and knowledge regarding dealing with medical and dental emergencies which can be encountered by any dentist in their daily clinical practice or routine life.
The event commenced with the arrival of the honorable judges, dental faculty and the students. The program began with the recitation of few verses from the Holy Quran by 2nd year BDS student Hafiz Najam Us Saqib. Later 8 groups presented their posters in front of the judges. Each group of students was given different topics related to medical and dental emergencies. One could see the reflection of immense information divulging from their creative and colorful posters. At the end of every presentation students were asked questions from the judges regarding their posters.
The judgment was done by respected Jury comprising of Dr.Ashar Afaq (Vice principal & HOD Community Dentistry, DUHS), Dr. Shama Asghar (HOD Operative Dentistry, BUMDC), Dr. Suriya Jameel (HOD Community Medicine, BUMDC). The event was followed by an introductory presentation on departmental achievements and a feature video on Community Support Programs running successfully in BUMDC under the supervision of Dr. Kulsoom Fatima Rizvi.
The ceremony was concluded with prize distribution to meritorious students who were presented with shields and certificates by the judges. 1st prize was awarded to poster titled “Syncope” presented by Agha Mahnoor, Komal Shiekh, Ashwa Niaz, Maiyra and Hasnain. Whereas, 2nd prize was achieved by the presenters Farheen Ahmed, Hafiz Najam, Pooja, Sumbul, Lubna, Hassam, and the title of their poster presentation was “Anaphylaxis”. Honorary shields were also presented by Dr. Wahab Kadri (HOD Maxillofacial Surgery, BUMDC) to the respected judges and certificate of appreciation was awarded to organizers Dr. Nazish Zafar and Dr. Raima Bashir, Assistant Qadeer Ahmed for working day in and out in making this event a complete success.
Lastly Dr. Wahab Kadri, on behalf of Dr. Kulsoom Rizvi, gave his vote of thanks to the chief guests for sparing their precious time, and the entire medical and dental faculty for being the part of the event. He also praised the students for their tremendous hard work. BUMDC encourages such extracurricular activities for students as they set a platform for all the budding dentists and researchers to present their real-time work and share their views on different aspects of dentistry.
