FRANCE: The researchers of a European study has recently pointed out that fatal blood clots could occur in patients suffering from mild to moderate COVID-19.

They have found a high risk of a life-threatening blood clot called Venous Thrombo Embolism (VTE) in mild to moderately affected COVID-19 patients. Previously the risk of blood clots has been associated with severe COVID-19.

For the research purpose, the researchers followed over 2000 patients who came to hospital emergency with mild or moderate COVID-19 and did not suffer from VTE. After four weeks, while examining those patients, VTE had developed in roughly 1 of every 200 mildly ill patients, i.e., who had not been hospitalised and nearly 5 of every 200 moderately ill patients overall.

Therefore, the researchers of the study "Risk of symptomatic venous thromboembolism in mild and moderate COVID-19: A comparison of two prospective European cohorts" conclude that doctors caring for COVID-19 patients, who have been mildly and moderately ill, need to be aware of VTE risks, especially in patients requiring hospitalisation.
