Punjab health minister for promoting safe blood donations

LAHORE:  Stressing the importance of provision of safe blood transfusion at the hospitals, Punjab Caretaker Health Minister Dr Javed Akram said the government has taken various steps to improve service delivery standards of blood banks in the province.

He said this while speaking as chief guest at an event held in connection with the World Blood Donor Day at the Children’s Hospital.

University of Child Health Sciences Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Masood Sadiq, Children’s Hospital Managing Director Dr Tipu Sultan, faculty members and a large number of students also participated in the event.

The students set up various scientific stalls in connection with the World Blood Donor Day.

The minister also led an awareness walk to promote blood donations.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Javed Akram said that blood flow is of primary importance in the human body and ensuring provision of safe blood to those in need is critical.

He said the main purpose of establishing the University of Child Health Sciences is to conduct research on children’s diseases, adding that special attention is being paid to quality research in the medical schools of Punjab.

“We will bring University of Child Health Sciences in QS ranking,” he vowed.

He claimed that the Children’s Hospital Lahore is the largest hospital in the world for the treatment of children, adding that the success of institutions in the world lies in the observance of laws.

“Very soon we will bring reforms in the referral system across the province,” he said.

Stressing the need for promoting blood donations, he said 4there are 49pc blood donors in the UK at present. 

The minister said the University of Child Health Sciences should have its own mobile blood bank, adding that health system has to be improved to provide better healthcare facilities to the people. 

He urged the varsity students to spread awareness about the benefits of donating blood in society.

He also congratulated the varsity administration for organising the event and distributed certificates of appreciation and cash prizes among the students who came up with the best stalls in the scientific exhibition.
