IRELAND: A woman, as a result of intolerance to sedatives, died due to a cardiac arrest, five days after a routine dental procedure of implant placement.
Margaret O’Doherty (72), a mother of three from Merrion, Co Wexford, suffered a cardiac arrest while undergoing a procedure to place seven dental implants at a Dublin dental clinic.
O’Doherty died after spending five days in the intensive care unit of St Vincent Hospital.
During a court hearing the two dental surgeons (Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon and Prosthodontist) that performed the procedure said that they were not informed about the deceased's intolerance to sedatives.
However, the husband of the deceased, Michael O’Doherty, a GP who runs a large medical practice in Gorey, said that there was nothing on the clinic's notes regarding his wife's fall, due to the sedatives. Counsel for the O’Doherty believed that the surgeons administered too much sedative, Midazolam to the patient during the procedure
