Halitosis or bad breath is fair of the most common problems patients present within the clinics. Despite many reasons for halitosis itself, it can also be an early sign of infection and gum disease. Gingivitis is among such inflammatory conditions of the oral cavity in which patients can present with bad breath

Gingivitis is characterised by swelling of the gingival tissues. The build-up of plaque and bacteria surrounding the gums and teeth is the prime source of inflammation. The inflammation coupled with bleeding gums and bacteria results in halitosis.

How Gingivitis Causes Halitosis?

Bad breath or halitosis is caused by the bacteria present in the oral cavity. The bacteria cause the breakdown of proteins and release volatile sulfur compounds. These sulfur compounds have the potential to cause bad breath. When the patient is suffering from infection or any sort of gum disease, the symptoms can further trigger the breakdown of proteins enhancing bad breath

The plaque also serves as a breeding ground for the bacteria. Hence, it is customary to prevent plaque buildup from accumulating on the gums and teeth.

According to research published in the Journal of the International Society of Preventive & Community Dentistry, the vast majority of halitosis cases relate to gingivitis, periodontitis or bacterial coating of the tongue. Meanwhile, up to 80% of patients with some degree of gum disease also exhibited halitosis in the study.

How To Treat Gingivitis?

Periodontal therapy for patients suffering from gingivitis and gum disease is a specialized form of deep dental cleaning designed to remove all plaque and bad bacteria from the gum pockets surrounding the teeth. This combined with improving at-home oral hygiene and treating related dry mouth will help get your gingivitis under control before it becomes

The good news is that maintaining a consistent oral hygiene routine will lower your risk of both gum disease and halitosis. Ensure that you follow these steps to keep your oral care in tip-top shape:

●      Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.

●      Floss once every day. Flossing is the key to preventing plaque buildup and hence halitosis.

●      See your dentist for regular checkups and ask about additional products to help control bacteria buildup in the mouth, such as a mouth rinse.

Sticking to a good oral hygiene routine will help you feel more confident not only about your breath but also about the overall health of your mouth. In instances when you are facing a situation despite maintaining a good oral hygiene routine, it is advised to consult your doctor to rule out the possible causes of halitosis.
