KARACHI: In line with the renowned quote by Bobby Sherman urging individuals to acquaint themselves with first aid and CPR, the Periodontology Department, in collaboration with General Medicine, held a hands-on assessment session on "Basic Life Support (BLS)" at the Bahria University Dental College (BUDC) recently.
Headed by Surgeon Commander (Surg Cdr) Prof Dr Pervaiz Asghar and Prof Dr Farzeen Tanwir, this event stressed the importance of BLS assessment in the routine life of healthcare professionals.
The event's objective was to evaluate the competency of house officers and final-year students in implementing the BLS technique, an integral part of their curriculum, to effectively manage life-threatening emergencies.
BLS training equips individuals with the necessary skills to handle critical medical situations, such as cardiac arrest and airway obstructions.
During the session, Dr Pervaiz Asghar provided an extensive demonstration of BLS techniques using a mannequin as a teaching aid. Each participant had the opportunity to practice these techniques on the mannequin, thereby translating their theoretical knowledge into practical expertise.
Various tools, including Automated External Defibrillator (AEDs), and the bag valve mask (BVM) AmbuBag, were employed for the assessment. The components of BLS training included initial assessment, airway maintenance, rescue breathing, mouth-to-mouth ventilation, exhaled air ventilation, and chest compressions.
The proficiency of the healthcare professionals was evaluated by Prof Dr Farzeen Tanwir, Dr Tauqeer Bibi, and Dr Bushra Ijaz.

The Department of Periodontology, under Head of Department, Prof Dr Farzeen Tanwir, also organised a Guest Speaker Session at the Bahria University Health Sciences Campus (BUHSC).
