Artificial Intelligence and Dentistry

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is another big break in the field of science which has taken the world by storm. The never-ending implications of AI has made it easier for humankind to work and study certain aspects, making it easier to switch from the human brain to artificial machines. Similarly, the sub-domain of AI referred to as machine learning (ML), utilises algorithms to perform tasks by observing the data.

ML uses mathematical equations to solve problems in complex data such as imagery. While the implications of AI have infiltrated the field of dentistry, there is still room for development. The lack of data availability, accessibility and comprehensiveness are some of the key lacking in AI.

Overjet & Dentistry

A company formed by MIT alumni 'overjet' uses AI for imaging in dentistry. The technique analyses and explains x-rays to service providers, including dentists and insurance workers.

The goal of AI-integrated x-rays is to eliminate errors and to provide optimum accuracy to improve patient care.

According to Wardah Iman, co-founder of overjet,

"It’s about moving toward more precision medicine, where we have the right treatments at the right time. That’s where technology can help. Once we quantify the disease, we can make it very easy to recommend the right treatment."

"I felt technology could play a big role in not only enhancing the diagnosis but also communicating with the patients more effectively, so they understand and don't have to go through the confusing process I did of wondering who's right," Inam added.

The AI technology provided by overjet offers precision medicine - a rapidly advancing field which offers customised solutions and treatment plans according to the patient's needs.

The overjet technology can outline and identify specific problems, including cavities, quantification of bone levels, and identification of periodontal diseases.

The technology is designed in such a way it can provide dentists with a way to communicate with patients. The software explains the problem and treatment plan so that it is easier for the patient to understand.

How does Overjet Work?

Overjet's AI software analyses the x-rays once uploaded to the computer. The images are then explained with the help of a tool which provides detailed information regarding the type of x-ray taken, location and severity of cavities, coloured crowns and overlays, level of tooth impaction as well as bone levels.

The software then fetches information regarding the treatment options and how they can be implemented depending on the patient's needs.

The markings on the x-ray allow the dentist to communicate the problem to patients efficiently.

Until now, Overjet has analysed tens of millions of X-rays and is working with insurance companies with more than 75 million patients in the U.S.
