KARACHI: Baqai Dental College (BDC) recently hosted an informative workshop on pits and fissure sealants for second-year BDS students. The event, organized by the Department of Community Dentistry, aimed to educate students on the importance of fissure sealants in preventive dentistry and their role in the prevention of dental caries.
The workshop commenced with an introductory lecture delivered by Prof. Dr. Asghar Ali Shigri. The lecture focused on the fundamental concepts of fissure sealants, covering indications and contraindications, step-by-step application procedures, types of materials used, and the necessary instruments for effective sealant placement. The lecture also emphasized the significance of proper chair positioning and posture during the application process.
A total of 65 students attended the workshop and were divided into four groups. After the lecture, the students proceeded to the phantom head lab, where they received practical demonstrations. Subsequently, each pair of students was assigned a phantom head, allowing them to apply the sealants individually under the supervision of experienced faculty members from the Department of Community Dentistry, namely Dr. Mehwish Bano, Dr. Raza Abidi, and Dr. Wajiha Anzar.
The workshop provided an excellent opportunity for students to collaborate with their peers in a workshop setting, refining their skills in the application of fissure sealants. The hands-on experience and guidance from the faculty members proved highly beneficial for all participants.
In order to continually improve the workshop experience, students were encouraged to provide feedback at the conclusion of the event. This valuable feedback will assist the organizers in refining future workshops and tailoring them to the specific needs of the students.
The Pits and Fissure Sealants workshop at Baqai Dental College was a resounding success, equipping second-year BDS students with valuable knowledge and practical skills in preventive dentistry. The college remains committed to organizing similar workshops in the future to further enhance the educational experience of its students.
