KARACHI: Stressing the need to ensure cleanliness in public health facilities, Sindh interim health minister Dr Saad Niaz has banned entry of those consuming paan, gutka etc in the government hospitals of the province.
The health minister issued the orders during a surprise visit to the Lyari General Hospital to assess the state of healthcare services.
During his surprise inspection, Dr Niaz focused on the gynecology and emergency wards, as well as the operation theatre.
Taking notice of cleanliness and hygiene issues in the hospital, the minister said a lack of funds should not serve as an excuse for substandard cleanliness in a healthcare facility. He firmly stated that maintaining cleanliness is possible even with limited resources, and using budget constraints as a justification is unacceptable, as it compromises patient care.
Dr Niaz warned the in charge of the emergency ward of serious consequences of failing to meet his responsibilities and stressed that all healthcare providers and personnel must fulfill their roles to the best of their abilities, using all available means.
He also conducted a thorough inspection of Lyari Medical College, engaging with enrolled students and inquiring about the quality of education, campus security, and available facilities.
Dr Niaz also announced a ban on individuals using paan, ghutka, and chewing tobacco from entering the hospital premises. The consumption of intoxicating substances will be strictly prohibited, and awareness banners regarding this policy will be displayed at various locations, he added.
The minister emphasised his commitment to making surprise visits to health facilities in the future as well, underscoring the need for hospital administrators to remain vigilant and responsive.
