KARACHI: Atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) is a procedure based on removing carious tooth tissues using hand instruments alone and restoring the cavity with adhesive material.
Since, it can be conducted using hand instruments and requires minimum preparation therefore learning this skill is essential for dental students. In this regard a workshop was conducted for 2nd year BDS students by Department of Community Dentistry.
Prof Dr Asghar Ali Shigri gave an introductory lecture to students which was based on concepts of ART, Principles of its application, identification of suitable teeth for ART. He discussed indications, contraindications and appropriate instruments and materials required in performing effective ART, in great detail. Further emphasis was laid on proper chair positioning and posture for performing this procedure.
After the lecture students moved to phantom head lab where there were firstly giving demonstration about proper chair position of operator as well as assistant, later on students were demonstrated step wise approach of ART after which they individually performed ART on phantom heads under Supervision of faculty of Community Dentistry, Dr Sumreen Mahzar, Dr Mehwish Bano, Dr Raza Abidi and Dr Wajiha Anzar.
