PMDC reinstated after President Alvi's rejection

ISLAMABAD: Recently, President Arif Alvi had rejected the PMDC bill 2022 and sent it back to the National Assembly.

However, a joint meeting was scheduled was soon after to discuss the passing of the PMDC bill. Approval by the joint session members to pass the bill would result in the reinstatement of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, as part of the law after a period of 10 days, regardless of the disapproval of President Arif Alvi.

This joint session took place recently, and after the unanimous approval of the members of the joint session, the National Assembly has approved of the PMDC bill 2022, reinstating the regulatory body at forefront of managing matters pertaining to medical and dental education in Pakistan.

The reestablishment of the Medical Teaching Institution (MTI) Act shall also transpire, as part of the PMDC bill. This bill was moved by PPP leader Jam Abdil Karim, and passed by the National Assembly, to be sent to President Arif Alvi.

After the recent joint session, the PMDC bill has become an act of Parliament, the reinstatement of the institution shall take place immediately.

According to a notification published in the official Gazette:

"It is expedient to consolidate the law relating to the registration of medical
practitioners and dentists and reconstitute the [Medical and Dental council] in Pakistan in order 
to establish a uniform minimum standard of basic and higher qualifications in medicine and
dentistry"

According to the notification, the first meeting of the council shall take place within the next fifteen days. The President of PMDC shall be appointed in the near future, by the Prime Minister himself.
