A CME activity on "Research topic-selection and Synopsis writing" was arranged by the Institute of Dentistry, Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences recently, with a view to introducing the postgraduate students to the ways of good research and synopsis writing skills as well as promoting research culture in postgraduates.
The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Haider Naqvi (Psychiatrist, AKU Trained Researcher & visiting faculty of LUMHS). As it was a good opportunity for youngsters to interact with the distinguished speaker and get first hand information on how to be an effective researcher. He provided key insights into Research Methodology.
The session was chaired by Principal Institute of Dentistry - Dr. Feroz. The dynamic session motivated the faculty & postgraduates to further strengthen learning, research and extension activities with the University system. To focus on interdisciplinary researches, Chairman Oral & maxillofacial Surgery - Dr. Ghazanfar Hassan, organized the activity. The objective of the session was to enhance the build capacities of young scholars. The session was also attended by Dr. Shajhan Katpar, Dr. Munir Banglani, Dr. Banafsha, Dr. Subuhi Ghani, Kashif Channar & Dr. M. Shahzad.
Dr. Ghazanfar Hassan said; it’s a series of sessions & we will continue this activity around the year. We need to cultivate a research culture in our youth. Scholars in dentistry and the life-sciences are expected to not only generate interesting and important theory, but also benefit the mankind with their insights.
The session was especially useful for the postgraduates, who are already involved in research or for those about to embark on a research thesis. Young researchers found this event as being particularly appropriate to their needs.
Knowledge about research methodology is one of the non-clinical topics which form an important part of Post graduation training. It was considered essential for trainees to acquire an understanding of research methodology so that they are able to critically appraise research reports on any subject. The session was full of techniques of research conduction, with understanding of the logic underlying the various techniques, methods and research design as a whole. It presented a logical and conceptual knowledge that would be so helpful and supporting to our youth in the research progression.
The session was designed to provide the young scholars & junior faculty, with an opportunity to master techniques of research methodology. Group sessions allowed participants to provide criticism of published research papers; to help design a clinical trial; detect common pitfalls in research conduction.
The inputs provided were on formulation of research problems, correlation and regression, writing synopsis.
The session was also intended to help those students who have had no previous experience of doing empirical research but who are already working towards formulating a research topic.
Much of this short session was devoted to introduction of the key terms used while writing a research proposal. Hopefully consequent to the discussion on these terms, a basic understanding of the nature of the research product and the research process will become easy to grasp, for the participants.
