KARACHI: The Department of Health Professions Education (DHPE) at Liaquat College of Medicine and Dentistry (LCMD) conducted a hands-on workshop on "How to Design and Conduct PBLs" to train basic and clinical dental faculty with student-centred pedagogy to enhance student's critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is a student-centred approach that involves groups of students working together to solve a real-world problem instead of direct teaching, which entails lecturing students on facts and concepts about a particular subject.
Dr Shaur Sarfaraz, Assistant Professor, IME-JSMU and Dr Yusra Nasir, Incharge DHPE, LCMD, conducted the workshop.
The workshop covered the theoretical aspect of PBL regarding the principles, the main difference between Case-Based Learning (CBL) and PBL, how to develop a problem for PBL, and the role of the facilitator and students during PBL.
All participants were grouped and were asked to develop a problem/trigger. Later it was evaluated by the checklist provided by the facilitators. The second activity consisted of role play. Through this activity, the faculty understood the role of leader and scriber and went through the process of the PBL tutorial regarding how it is done.
Dr Naheed Najmi, Vice Principal Registrar Dental section, LCMD, appreciated the efforts of the facilitators to conduct such a workshop.
