Medical, dental associations unite against PMDC’s age extension policy

PDA Condemns PMDC’s Age Relaxation Policy for Private Medical College Faculty YDA Plans Legal Action Against Controversial Decision

Medical, dental associations unite against PMDC’s age extension policy

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Dental Association (PDA) and the Young Doctors Association (YDA) have strongly criticized the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council’s (PMDC) decision to extend the maximum age limit for faculty members in private medical and dental colleges from 70 to 75 years. The PDA, led by President Dr. Khurshid Nasim, has condemned the policy, warning of its detrimental impact on young professionals and the future of healthcare education in Pakistan.

“This country and its future belong to the youth. By continuing to favor senior faculty with arbitrary decisions, regulatory bodies like PMDC risk stifling the growth of young professionals. We strongly oppose this age extension, as it reduces the limited job opportunities available to young graduates,” said Dr. Nasim in a statement to Dental News.

The PDA President emphasized the need to foster an environment prioritizing hiring fresh talent and young educators to introduce innovative ideas and energy into medical and dental education.

The Young Doctors Association (YDA) also announced plans to challenge the PMDC’s decision in court. Dr. Mehboob Noonari, Chairman of YDA Sindh, confirmed that the association is preparing a legal petition, terming the age relaxation a regressive step that will hinder the career growth of young graduates.

“We believe this decision directly contradicts the principles of empowering the next generation of medical professionals. The Government of Pakistan, the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP), and the PMDC must reconsider their stance,” Dr. Noonari stated.

The YDA Sindh has begun consultations with legal advisers and plans to take all necessary steps to address the issue. Dr. Noonari argued that reforms should focus on creating new positions and promoting fresh talent rather than extending the tenure of senior professionals.
