KARACHI: Bhitai Dental & Medical College (BDMC), Mirpurkhas, Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) conducted a one-day hands-on workshop (goat head) on primary surgical skills recently.
The event was organized under the supervision of the BDMC Managing Director Dr Ghulam Mustafa, and Deputy Managing Director Dr Mushtaque Khan, with the kind assistance of the Dean Prof Atif Jawad, Principal Dr Permanand, Vice Principal Dr Ali Maqbool and Dr Shuja Hamid.
The OMFS team collaborated with the Department of Medical Education to organise this event.
The 28 participants who attended the workshop included a lecturer, house officers, and final-year students of the college.
Dr Sip Narejo hosted the event in coordination with the organizers including Dr Prem Singh Sodha, Dr Adeel Ishtiaque Khan, Dr Taqdees Maryum, Dr Sadaf Ghuman, Dr Ameer Mahar and Dr Mohammad Anique, who acted as demonstrators, HO and student affairs in charge, respectively.
The event began with recitation of the Holy Quran, after which Assistant Professor Dr Aftab Ahmed gave welcome address and a presentation.
HOD and Associate Prof Dr Samreen Naz, Assistant Prof Dr Aftab Ahmed and Senior Registrar Dr Anand Kumar as facilitators provided hands-on demonstrations to the participants. Two 30-minute demonstrations were simultaneously run with half the participants assigned to each group, followed by two 60-minute practice sessions that were separated by a short tea break.
The topics discussed included fundamentals of soft tissue handling, different kinds of incisions (envelope, three-corner, four-corner, etc), principles of flap design, suturing techniques (simple interrupted, figure of 8, simple continuous and/or locking, etc), and biopsy sampling.
Additionally, to accommodate the participants’ special interest, advanced techniques such as frenectomies, buccal/palatal advancement flaps, and buccal fat of pad, were also briefly covered in the latter half of the session.
All participants received feedback questionnaires by the end, and some of them were requested for reviews.
Managing Director Dr Ghulam Mustafa, Deputy Managing Director Dr Mushtaque Khan and Principal Dr Permanand delivered parting addresses and appreciated the initiative, encouraging the organisiers to arrange more such learning opportunities in the future.
In the end, certificates were awarded, and lunch was served to the participants.
