KARACHI- How many times do we see lower class children around us? Working on tables, selling fruits, lifting weight their bodies can’t even bear. How many times do we actually notice them? Do we end up bargaining over their purchases? Or do we try to help them? Two such children - Abbas and Sajjad - working at the cafeteria of Hamdard University’s dental hospital were spotted by our two House Officers, Dr Mavra Tirmizi and Dr Rasheeda Murtaza. Since December, these young doctors have been staying a few hours after work to teach the kids daily. The kids who are only six to eight-year-old had next to no learning before the girls started teaching them. “We started with English alphabets and moved them on to recognizing colours and shapes. Routinely used English alphabets of basic level (mono and bi-syllable) are taught to read and spell. Urdu alphabets and also taught to read and spell at a basic level. The level of teaching is adjusted as to the retention of students. The girls plan to bring the children’s education to a step further by teaching them to be able to read, write as well as converse to a basic level both in English and Urdu. Basic level to mathematics will also be introduced to them. Watching these young faces lightened up with joy and the contention in their eyes upon gaining knowledge is such a wonderful experience that cannot be put into words. It is the enthusiasm of the students that keeps the young teachers sparing extra time to them with diligence and pride. Although it is on a very small level, but realizing the responsibility to the society, the young Hamdardarians are contributing their part towards educated Pakistan. We feel proud to produce graduates who feel for their nation and make positive contribution within their resources. May Allah give them better reward?
