Dentists And Suicide: The Need For Attention

Pre-existing depression and suicidal tendencies within an individual are contributive behaviours for worsening mental health in dentists.

Reality or Myth?

Dentists are educated and well-respected professionals in society. Therefore suicide of a dentist may come as a shock to many. It is estimated that dentists have more tendency to develop suicidal thoughts than most other professions, but occupation is not a significant indicator for being suicidal. After the latest studies conducted on the subject, it has become clear that dentists are not the only professionals seemingly to commit suicide. Stress inducing factors that develop during daily practice could generate certain disorders that can increase suicidal events.

Major stressors

Stress begins in dental schools with competitiveness and lack of sleep that continues during the house job with high demands and future insecurities.

Emotional exhaustion renders physicians view patients as objects. It is termed burnout, i.e. losing empathy for patients. Feeling a lack of achievement may render a dentist hopeless and their work pointless, especially if patients do not appreciate their services.

Work-home imbalance commonly occurs with dentists as dental procedures may take longer than designated clinic hours. Moreover, pre-existing depression and suicidal tendencies within an individual are contributive behaviours for worsening mental health in dentists.

Solutions and help

Individual's primary concern should be overall, physical, mental and emotional health, regardless of the profession. There are many solutions and career options after dentistry. Opting and learning about them also reduce the prevalent frustration. Proper guidance and help from colleagues have a crucial role in alleviating anticipatory anxiety.

It is essential to shift a rigid mindset towards a growth mindset by building the capacity for our minds to learn and grow. We can enlighten our brains to make positive decisions. Self-compassion is also paramount. It means offering yourself love and kindness when you are suffering. Making yourself comfortable and guilt-free is essential. Being self-critical all the time can be very demotivating.

You are not alone

There are many tools by which we can overcome depression. We should serve ourselves a constant reminder that we all suffer and go through these negative thoughts. We are not alone, which can be soothing in itself. In addition, we should not hesitate to ask for help and, if needed, professional counselling.
