KARACHI: A team of house officers from the Department of Oral Medicine and Diagnosis, Ziauddin College of Dentistry set up a dental camp at the International Disabled Day Carnival held by Moonlight Foundation recently. The team was led by Dr Ibtisam Afzal followed by Dr Ali Mustafa, Dr Fazeela Jamaluddin, Dr Maha Laqa Maroof and Dr Zarmeen Intesara.
Children with special needs were present under the age of 18 who had either physical or cognitive disabilities, including intellectual disability (ID), Down Syndrome (DS), Autism spectrum Disorder (ASD), Cerebral Palsy (CP), Epilepsy (EP), and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
The main objective of this camp in the carnival was to cater special children in a place they would feel validated and comfortable as they require a much more relaxed and attentive environment for dental examination.
An interactive session was done with parents/guardians to brief them on oral care techniques to keep their child’s mouth healthy. Toothpastes samples were distributed among children and parents to encourage them to make necessary efforts towards a healthier mouth
