ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Authority (FIA) has arrested a suspect from the federal capital for his alleged involvement in selling fraudulent degrees under the guise of The Open International University, Sri Lanka.
According to FIA officials, the arrest of the suspect, Muhammad Amin Baig was made in Sector F-10, Islamabad.
The arrest was made following the revelation that the detained former chief executive officer (CEO) of the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap, Sheikh Akhtar Hussain, had acquired a fake degree from Baig’s fraudulent setup.
The FIA spokesperson said that its inspectors Kashmif Riaz and Ehtasham Gondal, found printed degrees, certificates, fake university stamps, and admission forms in the possession of the suspects.
He said the suspect allegedly ran a fraudulent international council, providing MD degrees for $1,000 and PhD degrees for $1,500. Biag was conducting his unlawful operations through different agents, he added.
He said the arrest was ordered by FIA Anti-Corruption Circle, Islamabad, Deputy Director Afzal Khan Niazi.
The spokesperson said contact has been made with Sri Lankan authorities through Interpol in this regard.
Further investigations are going on with more revelations expected, he added.
