PENNSYLVANIA: Scientists have recently developed mouth haptics that allows users to feel distinct virtual sensations using their mouths.

The Future Interfaces Group researchers at Carnegie Melon University have developed a new haptic feedback device that uses ultrasonic transducers to recreate a genuine feeling of touch on the mouth, enabling more realistic VR experiences. They added ultrasonic transducers to a Meta Quest 2 (Advanced All-In-One Virtual Reality Headset) that focuses acoustic energy on the mouth.

When partnered with virtual reality demos, this essentially means that users will feel different sensations on their lips, teeth, and tongue, depending on what they're doing in-game.

Different sensations are employed to simulate each event in Future Interfaces Group's video, which includes wandering through cobwebs in a forest before getting covered in spider venom, drinking from a water fountain, sipping coffee, and smoking a cigarette, cleaning your teeth, and riding a motorcycle.
