KARACHI - Competition is a healthy intellectual trend which enhances knowledge and the academic process. In that regard, poster competitions in medical colleges help the students express their thoughts and knowledge to the faculty and a learned audience, to make the concepts easily to understand.
The Department of Prosthodontics in Hamdard University Dental Hospital recently organized a poster competition for the BDS Second Professional Year students. The chief operational organizer for the poster competition was Dr. Mehwish Saquib, Lecturer at Hamdard University Dental Hospital. The Organizing committee included; Dr. Mehmood Hussain- HOD & Associate Professor HUDH, Miss. Faiza, Dental Technologist Prosthetic Laboratory, Dr. Moin Khan, Lecturer HUDH and Dr. Asma Pethani, Lecturer HUDH.
Head of Prosthodontic Department and Associate Professor Fatima Jinnah Dental College, Dr. Murtaza Raza Kazmi, was the principal guest of the event. While the panel of judges included Dr. Yawar Khan, Faculty Department of Prosthodontics, Hamdard University Dental Hospital.
The formal session started with a welcome note by Dr. Mehmood Hussain, Head of Prosthodontic Department and Associate Professor Hamdard University Dental Hospital, and the judgment criteria was explained.
A total of 42 students participated in the poster competitions, and were divided into total 6 groups. Different topics were assigned to each group, namely:
1. Arrangement of teeth in complete denture
2. Dewaxing and packing of complete denture
3. Finishing and polishing of complete denture
4. Articulators
5. Occlusal wax rim
6. Steps of processing the base plate of complete denture.
All the groups were judged by Dr. Murtaza Raza Kazmi and Dr. Yawar Khan. The rationale behind this educational event was to promote logical knowledge, creative talents and academic intelligence of students. Such Poster Competitions are ideal opportunities for students to apply their knowledge, share the outcomes of their hard work and present their knowledge to viewers.
The judgement criteria was based on content of poster, communication skills, appearance of poster and Q/A session. The competition was quite tough, making the decision difficult. Towards the end of the event, Dr. Murtaza Raza Kazmi addressed the gathering and distributed certificates among the participants and the organizing team. Later on shields were distributed to the presenters of the poster competition. The biggest cash prize was won by the group presenting the topic of; Dewaxing and packing of complete denture.-PR
