KARACHI: In a significant development addressing the issue of excessive fees charged by government and private medical and dental colleges, the Government of Pakistan has taken a decisive step towards bridging the fee disparity among these educational institutions.
Sources have confirmed that the government is committed to establishing clear guidelines for the fees structure in medical and dental colleges across the country. To accomplish this objective, a special committee has been constituted under the directives of the National Medical and Dental Academic Board.
The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) announced the appointment of Professor Dr. Zia-ul-Haq as the chairman of a five-member committee tasked with soliciting the fee structures from both government and private medical and dental colleges. The committee's mandate extends to evaluating the fee structures implemented in these institutions post-2020.
The committee will thoroughly scrutinize the fee structures of these colleges, aiming to ensure fairness and transparency. Following their assessment, the committee will put forth recommendations to the National Medical and Dental Academic Board. Subsequently, comprehensive rules and regulations will be established to govern the fee structures of these educational institutions.
Sources further revealed that the ultimate decision regarding the fee policy will rest with the National Medical and Dental Academic Board. It has come to light that some colleges are currently charging up to three million rupees per year, while overseas seats are being charged a considerably higher amount of $18,000 per year.
This pivotal move by the Government of Pakistan is expected to standardize fees across medical and dental colleges, promoting equal access to quality education in the healthcare sector.
