LAHORE: The Faculty of Community and Preventive Dentistry, University College of Dentistry (UCD), The University of Lahore, recently arranged a symposium in coordination with GSK pharmaceuticals to enlighten the young dentists about the peri-implant complications.

Dr Arooj Ul Hassan, Associate Professor and Head of Community & Preventive Dentistry Department, UCD, and Dr Muhammad Haseeb, Associate Professor and Head of Periodontology Department, UCD, led the session. The house officers and faculty members of the Community and Preventive Dentistry and Periodontology departments attended the seminar.

 Dr Arooj Ul Hassan gave the first lecture titled, 'To Scale or Not to Scale? Misconceptions associated with Dental Scaling'. He explained patients' concerns before getting scaling and what misconceptions they might have. He enumerated the possible reasons for these concerns and how to alleviate these misapprehensions using scientific knowledge.

 He told them that by listening to the patients make them feel comfortable and then explaining the details about the advantages of scaling; the Dental Health Professional can help the patient understand the need for scaling.

 Dr Muhammad Haseeb gave the second lecture, titled 'Peri-Implant Complications: Learned and Unlearned Concepts'. With the help of clinical cases, he explained the Peri-Implant complications, their causes and ways to reprimand the complications. He discussed that implant placement is a relatively complex procedure, and multiple factors play a specific role in placing a successful implant.

 Prof. Dr Riaz Ahmad Warraich, Principal, UCD, applauded both the speakers. He commended them for opening the minds of the young dentists to both the handling of the psychology of the patient and complications related to complex procedures.
