KARACHI: The Operative Dentistry Department of Bahria University Medical & Dental College (BUMDC) recently held a role-play competition among final year students.
BUMDC has incorporated one of the modern teaching strategies of role-playing in its curriculum, which provide students with real-world scenarios to help them learn negotiation, teamwork, cooperation and persuasion.
Students were divided into six groups with two contestants each and were assigned topics around which they were asked to prepare clinical scenarios. Topics included Retreatment, Management of perforation, Pulpectomy of a child, High caries risk, Pulpectomy Vs. Extraction, Separated instrument.
Dr Shama, Head of Operative Dentistry Department, BUMDC, led the competition. Under the supervision of their facilitators, Dr Ayesha and Dr Adeel, all groups came up with realistic, intelligent, yet hilarious scenarios commonly encountered during dental practice. Senior lecturer Dr Mansoor and Assistant Professor Dr Akbar judged the competition.
After the performances, the group comprising Syed Ali Husnain and Fatima Ikram with the topic' High Caries Risk' were declared victorious.
Dr Kulsoom Rizvi, Vice Principal Dental section, BUMDC, Dr Shama and the judges appreciated the students' effort and skills and further stressed the importance of empathy, listening to the patient, and building a rapport with them towards the overall healing of the individual.
