KARACHI: Another person died of Naegleria virus in Karachi, raising this year’s death toll of the brain-eating amoebae to nine.
As per Sindh health department, Adnan Tariq (45), a resident of New Karachi, was the latest victim of the brain-eating amoeba.
Advising precautions, the provincial health authorities have urged the people to chlorinate their water tanks, pools and other sources to avoid contact with the deadly amoebae.
Naegleria, which usually grows in warm water, if ingested through the nose, eats the entire brain, causing death.
It is mostly found in water in swimming pools, ponds and tanks, with no or low chlorine content, while extreme heat is also conducive for its growth.
An infected person shows symptoms like those of meningitis, including severe headache, vomiting or nausea, neck stiffness and body tremors.
