KARACHI: As many as 51 MS in Public Health students of the APPNA Institute of Public Health (AIPH) of Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) completed their studies with thesis, and 135 others did the same with coursework since 2014, while 40 thesis projects are in progress, with average 15-18 research papers published annually at the institute.
These impressive figures were presented at a meeting held to review AIPH performance and discuss its future goals.
The meeting was moderated by Dr Hira Tariq, an AIPH faculty member, and attended by Vice Chancellor Prof Amjad Siraj Memon, Registrar Dr Azam Khan, Director of Research Prof Dr Huma Shareef, as well as other faculty members.
AIPH in-charge Prof Dr Amna Rehana Siddiqui highlighted the institute’s vision and mission to promote excellence in the public health education, research and practice. She also acknowledged the contributions of Asst Prof Dr Shiraz Sheikh, Asstt Prof Dr Greesh Kumar and Asstt Prof Dr Zaeema Ahmer in leading various academic and research activities at AIPH.
The VC appreciated the achievements of AIPH and emphasized the need for implementing the research findings for the betterment of public health in Pakistan. He also suggested that AIPH should share its achievements with the Association of Physicians of Pakistani-Descent of North America (APPNA), a national organisation that represents hundreds of Pakistani physicians and dentists in the US.
The AIPH senior management agreed with the VC’s advice and expressed its desire to establish public health centres in the areas needing these facilities the most.
