Jamshoro: a Pre-Conference Workshop on Head & Neck Oncology & Live Surgery was arranged by the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Institute of Dentistry Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences (LUMHS). While addressing the participants, Prof. Bikha Ram Devrajani expressed that the field of Head & Neck Oncology encompassed all aspects of clinical practice, basic and translational research on the etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, assessment, management, follow-up and prognosis of patients with head and neck tumors. He added that head and neck cancers were twice as common in men. Alcohol and tobacco usage were the two most common causes of head and neck cancers, especially cancers of the oral cavity.
Prof. Dr. Syed Ghazanfar Hassan Taqvi highlighted that the institute had advanced diagnostic and treatment techniques for head and neck cancer. With an early and accurate diagnosis, these types of cancers were often curable. After establishing an accurate diagnosis, a personalized plan of care could be established with all of the latest treatment options, including access to specialized clinical trials. He added that the sole focus should not only on keeping patients free of cancer, but also on restoring or preserving vital functions such as breathing, speaking, and swallowing.
The speakers also addressed cosmetic concerns such as appearance, facial symmetry, and contour. They said that it was important for every cancer patient to have best quality of life possible.
Prof. Muhammad Israr and Dr. Aqil Shah also performed a live Head & Neck Surgery for the learning of the participants.
