ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) has recently permitted the provinces to prepare their strategies for admissions in the medical and dental colleges, especially in the private medical colleges, but hold themselves to lower the merit.
While talking to a local newspaper, Dr Arshad Taqi, President PMC, said that around 7,500 to 8,000 candidates in Sindh had obtained passing marks in the Medical and Dental Colleges Test (MDCAT) against 3,000 seats in colleges. He said that all the seats in the medical and dental colleges of Sindh could be filled with the deserving candidates holding provincial domicile. He didn't allow the provinces to lower the merit and accommodate wealthy candidates in medical and dental colleges.
De Arshad said that hundreds of deserving candidates fail to get medical education every year because their parents could not afford private medical colleges. He added that it was the collective responsibility of the state, society, pharmaceutical industry and others to finance the education of meritorious students who fail to get admissions in the private sector.
Commenting on Dr Azra Pechuho, Sindh Health Minister, regarding lowering the merit to accommodate candidates possessing Sindh's domicile, he said the PMC could not compromise on merit and the transparency of the admission process.
