JAMSHORO: The Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS) recently launched its new department of Forensic Odontology at the university’s Institute of Dentistry.
During the inauguration ceremony, Vice Chancellor LUMHS, Prof Ikram Din Ujjan defined forensic odontology as the contribution and application of dental science in the investigation of legal cases. He stressed that this field is essential in the recognition of abuse in victims of all ages and in all forms of cases.
Prof Ikram that forensic dentistry can help the authorities in solving crimes. Forensic dental fieldwork also playes a role in identifying missing persons or victims of gruesome incidents.
Dean of the LUMHS, Faculty of Dentistry Prof Feroz Ali Kalhoro reiterated the aforementioned fact that through the advent of the new Forensic Dentistry department, dental professionals shall play a major role in collaborating with the legal personnel and law enforcement in maintaining accurate dental records and analysing data to recognise malpractice, negligence, fraud or abuse, and to identify unknown persons.
Dr Falak Murad Shah, Chief of the Department of Odontology, said that LUMHS has become a pioneer by establishing its own Forensic Odontology department.
