To mark Children’s Oral Health Month, a free Dental Checkup was conducted by the department of Community & Preventive Dentistry of Sindh Institute of Oral Health Sciences at “Kashif Iqbal Thalassemia Care Center”.
The blood related condition, Thalassemia represents a group of genetically inherited disorders, with a varying degree of severity in hemoglobin synthesis.
A team consisting of four well qualified dentists, namely; Dr. Marium Azfar (HOD Community & Preventive dentistry, SIOHS), Dr. Imran khan, Dr. Aqsa and Dr. Anita Shah, alongside 2nd year BDS students, carried out extra-oral and intra-oral examinations of around 50 patients, diagnosing their oral conditions.
This visit was planned by the Community Dentistry Department of SIOHS, in order to serve the under-privileged children suffering from Thalassemia, and increase their awareness regarding dental hygiene.
Most of the patients were from areas where dental care was mostly inaccessible. Along with the dental examinations, a detailed lecture on Oral Hygiene Instructions, Brushing Technique and methods to prevent Oral Diseases was delivered. At the end of the interactive lecture session, samples of Toothpaste and Tooth Brushes were distributed among the children.
Sindh Institute of Oral Health Sciences (SIOHS) plans to continue conducting such activities regarding awareness on critical issues related to health, and plans to work in collaboration with different welfare organizations working for the benefit of the under-served segments of our community.
