BDC’s Community Outreach Program

Karachi: The Department Of Community Dentistry, Baqai Dental College, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ali Asghar Shigri, Head ofDepartment, organized a visit to Khuda Ki Basti, in relation to Community Oriented Dental Education Program for 2nd year BDS students.


Prof. Dr. Ali Asghar Shigri, along with his department members, Dr. Muhammad Ali Leghari, Dr. Samreen Mazhar, Dr. Mahwish Bano, and Dr. Raza Abbas Abidi and 65 students, visited KHUDA KI BASTI to conduct a dental survey.

It was an informative and creative way to interact with, and edu cate the students of rural area, related totheir oral health.

Mr. Salman Nazar, Administrator, Baqai Medical Complex Khuda ki Basti, updated the students about the vision of Mr. and Mrs. Baqai, to build an educated and healthy Pakistan. Mr. Salman also gave the faculty and students a tour of the hospital & its departments. The hospital comprised of a comfortable waiting area, reception desk, Outpatient Department (OPD) and labour room. The hospital was equipped with a proper pathological laboratory where most of the necessary lab tests are done either for free or at very low cost. The students also visited the mosque built inside the Baqai Complex.

The Oral Health Survey was conducted at the Complex’s Community Secondary School, that provides free education and is run by Baqai Foundation.

Students were divided into groups and each group was sent into different classes to examine the children’s oral cavity. Sterilized instruments were used and all students were well equipped with their masks and gloves. Dental survey forms were filled.

Instructions were given to all the children regarding proper tooth brushing, maintenance of Oral Hygiene and adopting healthy food habits to avoid oral diseases.

This visit enhanced knowledge, interpersonal responsivity, communication, cognitive & psychomotor skills among the students, and instilled a sense of empathy.
