KARACHI: Twenty researchers from the Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) recently underwent comprehensive training for writing effective grant applications in efforts to support several community-oriented research projects at the university.

The workshop was conducted by Junaid A Razzak, Professor of Emergency Medicine at Johns Hopkins University in the United States.

Prof Razzak discussed ways to search for grants, improve communication, formulate proposals, and reviewed writing techniques presented by the participants as well. Using the US National Institutes of Health model, he encouraged the participants to identify priority areas in research and funding.

Prof Lubna Ansari Baig, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Dean, JSMU-APPNA Institute of Public Health, said that the Institute was working on research projects directly affecting the population in Sindh to provide data and suggest solutions to policymakers.

Vice-Chancellor, JSMU, Prof Dr Tariq Rafi, distributed certificates to participants and appreciated Dr Junaid Razzak for his efforts in giving back to the healthcare community in Pakistan as a prominent US-based researcher of Pakistani origin.

He said that public health researchers aim to promote economic growth, healthcare, and social progress and workshops like these build their capacity by exposing them to international mechanisms in securing funds for such projects.
