EFP report warns of alarming surge in caries, periodontitis in Europe

A comprehensive report recently issued by the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) warns of the pervasive challenge posed by dental caries and periodontitis, two widespread oral diseases impacting millions across Europe.

Entitled "The Burden of Caries and Periodontitis," the report underscores the substantial toll of these conditions on individuals and healthcare systems, urging a concerted global response to address them.

Discussing the rising burden of periodontitis and caries, the report called for improved oral and systemic health outcomes on a global scale. It reveals alarming statistics regarding the prevalence of these diseases and their adverse effects on oral health.

Spanning six countries including Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Indonesia, and the UK, the study introduces an innovative caries prevention and care cost calculator, saying that the treatment of preventable gum disease and caries contributes to a staggering 5pc of global healthcare expenditures.

Despite the evident interconnectedness between periodontitis and caries, the report mentions a lack of integrated approaches in their study, stressing the importance of cohesive strategies to address common risk factors.

A key feature of the report is the development of the "caries prevention and care cost calculator," which estimates the long-term direct costs of caries management across various socioeconomic groups in the six countries under review, while also assessing potential cost reductions associated with preventive measures.

The EFP stressed the need for intensified prevention, early detection, and treatment strategies to mitigate the impact of these oral diseases and enhance oral health outcomes throughout Europe. This necessitates collaboration among policymakers, healthcare professionals, and the public.

Moreover, the white paper calls for a preventive approach to oral care, besides community-based interventions, early education, and ensuring access to affordable oral health products and services.

It urges concerted action to address oral health disparities and urges holistic approaches to oral care. It serves as a call to stakeholders to prioritize oral health and effectively implement evidence-based interventions.
