LAHORE: The Institute of Advanced Dental Sciences and Research (IADSR) successfully conducted a two-day hands-on workshop on Exodontia, designed to enhance the clinical expertise of dental professionals. The workshop, held from January 24th to January 25th, 2025, was part of the Professional Diploma in Advanced General Dentistry (PDAGD) program. It aimed to provide comprehensive training in tooth extraction techniques while addressing the common challenges faced by dental practitioners.
The workshop was facilitated by Prof. Arshad Mahmood Malik (BDS, MDS, FICD, FPFA), Dean of HBS Dental College, Islamabad. The session commenced with a detailed overview of Exodontia, including its historical background and the anatomy of each tooth. Participants gained in-depth knowledge about root curvature, root angulation, and pre-surgical assessment, including medical history, physical examination, intraoral and extraoral evaluations, radiographic assessments, and laboratory investigations.
A key highlight of the workshop was the practical demonstration of furcation assessment techniques and the step-by-step guide to measuring furcation depth. Prof. Arshad provided detailed insights into pre-operative planning and explained how to minimize complications associated with tooth extractions and impactions.
The second day of the workshop focused entirely on hands-on training, allowing participants to apply their newly acquired knowledge in a clinical setting. They practiced tooth extractions on live patients under expert supervision. Various dental instruments, including elevators, forceps, and impactors, were demonstrated, with particular emphasis on the proper use of Coupland elevators, Cryer’s elevators, and angular elevators.
Through interactive learning and real-time guidance, attendees learned to tackle complications encountered in daily dental practice, significantly improving their clinical skills and confidence in performing extractions. The workshop concluded with highly positive feedback from participants, who appreciated the practical exposure and expert mentorship.
By providing a structured and skill-based approach to Exodontia, IADSR continues to empower dental professionals with cutting-edge techniques to improve patient outcomes.
