HOD Community Dentistry Dr Syed Sarosh Mahdi, and Assistant Professor Dr Maria K. Siddiqui of Jinnah Medical and Dental College (JMDC), in assistance with their lecturers, Dr Seema Shahid and Dr Asim Iqbal, planned a visit to Mashal Orphanage with their second year BDS students.

Mashal Orphanage is an institution located at Dar Us Salam Housing Society in Korangi, Karachi. The institute is run by Mashal Foundation, which was set up in 1999 to provide help to the impoverished. Currently, the institute caters for almost 50 orphan children.

A team from Community Dentistry Department of the JMDC went there to spread awareness about dental hygiene among the children, and conducted basic dental checkups. The BDS students spent quality time with the children, and had discussions with them on the importance of dental hygiene, and the adverse consequences it can lead to if not sustained.

At the end of the session, the children were provided with goody bags including dental kits, and eatables to munch on. The joy on their innocent faces was evident; and the spark in their eyes spoke of big dreams.
