WHO warns of counterfeit drug materials in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised alarms over the circulation of counterfeit raw materials for drug manufacturing in Pakistan.

The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has issued a warning about fake propylene glycol, a key ingredient used in various medicines, being distributed by unregulated entities.

DRAP has released images and a cautionary notice concerning two batches of counterfeit propylene glycol, identified under the labels Dowerup and Doochemical.

Propylene glycol is extensively used in the pharmaceutical industry as an excipient in various formulations, including alternative medicines and solutions.

The regulatory body warned that the use of counterfeit propylene glycol could pose serious health risks due to improper formulation, advising pharmaceutical companies to recall any products made with the counterfeit material and to source raw materials exclusively from authorized suppliers.

DRAP has also urged field inspectors to investigate and act on reports of counterfeit products.
