KARACHI: A walk and a rally was held at the Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) to observe Youm-e-Takreem-e-Shuhada-e-Pakistan, to pay tributes to the sacrifices of martyrs for the country.
Special Assistant to the Chief Minister Qasim Siraj Soomro was the chief guest of the event. The participants led by JSMU Vice Chancellor Prof Amjad Siraj Memon held a walk and a rally from the main gate of Askari-III to that of the varsity to show solidarity with the martyrs of Pakistan.
Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Saadia Akram, Registrar Dr Azam khan, Prof Tariq Mehmood, Deans, principals, Head of the departments, faculty members and students participated in the event carrying placards and banners inscribed with messages of solidarity and support for the martyrs. They also chanted patriotic slogans.
Later, the students council staged a play in the varsity’s lecture hall on Sepoy Maqbool Hussain, that was well-received by the audience.
In his speech on the occasion, VC Memon said, “We got freedom after great sacrifices. We have to protect this freedom. It is our duty to respect and protect the honour of those who guard the borders in the night and we sleep comfortably in our homes.”
“People may have different political views, but if they are against the country, we will not tolerate it.”
Mr Soomro said, “The desecration of the martyrs of Pakistan is like tearing the hearts of the mothers who sacrificed their beloved sons for this motherland. The basic principles of our faith, national security should not be compromised.” He advised the youth to exercise their right to vote cautiously.
Prof Tariq Mehmood said, “Whilst we may have different political thoughts, we must not criticise the country’s security agencies. It is condemnable to desecrate the monuments of martyrs of Pakistan and criticise the country.” Registrar Dr Azam Khan also emphasised that the martyrs should be respected.
At the end, Additional Director affiliated colleges Dr Rahat Naz delivered a vote of thanks. Assistant Prof Dr Nazish Jaffer was the host of the event.
