Home Remedies For Toothache

Home Remedies For Toothache

The oral health issue responsible for toothache at first will not simply vanish, as your teeth cannot heal themselves, so you should still follow up with your dentist.

Relieve toothache at home

If you have a toothache, we recommend you see your dentist as soon as possible. Until then, you can take some over-the-counter painkillers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen and try out some of these remedies at home to soothe your pain.

Warm salt water rinses

It serves as a first-line treatment, a natural mouthwash, which helps in reducing the inflammation of the gums around the tooth and clearing any food debris stuck in between. Mix ½ teaspoon salt in a glass of warm water, swish around the mouth thoroughly and spit it out.

Hydrogen Peroxide rinses

Diluted Hydrogen Peroxide acts as a disinfectant that can kill bacteria. Take 3% solution in equal parts with water, rinse thoroughly and spit it out. DO NOT swallow!

Cold compress

Cold compress causes vessels to constrict, reducing the blood flow to the area, making the pain less severe and swelling. Apply an ice pack wrapped in a towel at the affected area for 20 minutes and repeat every few hours.

Clove oil

Clove has been used since ancient times for pain-relieving, as it contains eugenol, a natural antiseptic. Soak a cotton ball in the oil and apply it to the affected area. Moreover, you can add a drop of clove oil to a small glass of water to use as a mouthwash.

Vanilla extract

It contains alcohol which numbs the pain, and antioxidants that may help in healing. You can dab a small amount on a cotton ball or finger and apply it directly to the aching tooth.

Peppermint tea bags

A cooled down used peppermint tea bag relieves the ache when pressed on the affected tooth.

Garlic

Garlic contains antibacterial allicin and may also help in pain relief. You can chew on a clove or apply garlic paste ( mixture of crushed garlic and a bit of salt) on the tooth.

Protect your tooth and prevent toothache

While home remedies can offer temporary relief, we suggest you only rely on these moderately. Moreover, protect your teeth by brushing and flossing twice daily, and visit your dentist regularly, as prevention is better than cure. However, you have to talk to your dentist before using any remedy if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or have any medical condition.
